New beginnings

Violent protesters, loyal to President Donald Trump, storm the Capitol, Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, in Washington. It’s been a stunning day as a number of lawmakers and then the mob of protesters tried to overturn America’s presidential election, undercut the nation’s democracy and keep Democrat Joe Biden from replacing Trump in the White House. This website will evolve and develop but first and foremost I want it to be place, mid-Coronavirus pandemic where I have space to write, develop my thoughts and start talking about my passion: history. Perhaps we can use history to shine a light on the modern world and work out what has gone wrong, why things are happening as they are, and to learn? I hope so.

I last had a personal blog around 10-12 years ago – a site over on Blogger.com where I probably spent too much agonising or shouting at the world. The world has too much shouting and ignorance on social media, and I’d like to correct that.

Sitting here in the United Kingdom and looking across the Atlantic to the United States of America the shouting, so-called fake news, and ignorance that has consumed political debate and public discourse means I want to strive for accurate understanding of the past, current affairs, and politics. The US Presidential election and its aftermath – the storming of the Capitol – feels like we are living through significant change, culture war, and a confused and anxious world. Truth and accuracy is even more important.

I certainly do not want to be another angry man shouting on social media. Indeed perhaps that is something worthwhile exploring in time: why is everyone so angry?

That will not doubt bring me articulate my thoughts about things like Brexit, Donald Trump, social media, immigration, and recent politics. But by calling this website ‘Modern History Man’ I want to dip into modern history more broadly – the ‘modern’ era is certainly not just the 20th & 21st centuries!

I want to be interesting, thought provoking, and be engaging; but also to educate, flag historical things, places, sources, and people of interest (living and dead). As I write and explore historical perspectives here I hope you find it interesting should you end up reading what I write.

More soon…
